In Ghana, the Prize money for wining a particular sports event has been the major public domain due to the high rates of the West African nation and their passion for football.

Since 2000,  Prize money for Ghana Premier League has been a public discussion whenever it is announced.

Historically, Ghana premier league is one of the top professional national football league in Africa. The league was officially established in 1956 by the Ghana football Association. Over the years, the Ghana premier league has experienced significant growth in every aspect. Ghana premier league currently has 18 participating clubs and matches are broadcast live on Startimes. In terms of sponsorship, the Ghanian premier league is sponsored by notable companies such as MTN, Puma, Nasco, Melcom and Startimes. Ghana premier league was Africa’s strongest leagues in the 1st decade of the 21st century according to IFFHS.

Early this week, Ghana Football Association announced the prize money of $100,000 USD for winners of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.
The Disclosure of the Prize money as been the talk of the town, with most Sports Journalists contemplating about it whether it is small or big.

According to the FA, the ultimate winner of the flagship competition will go home with $42,881. (GhS 250,000) which seems smaller that some top African leagues like South Africa(PSL), Nigeria Premier league( NPL) Tunisia Super league, Egyptian Super league, Botola league in Morocco, Algeria Ligue 1 and even Ivorian Ligue 1.

Over the years, South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, Morocco, Tunisia, DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Tanzania are well famous in the news when it comes to players monthly salaries with all these football nations not paying not less than $800 USD for their top division players. In Ghana our players are being paid as low as $100( GhC 520.00) for GPL.

However, Some Soccer conossiours are applauding Kurt Okraku’s administration for putting up good measures to increase the prize money little bit as compared to past administrators.

In South Africa PSL, the winner took home 1.5million SAR, with Nigeria also announcing 30Million Naira, Tunisia with 100,000 dollars as well during 2020 football calendar year.

Below are the prize money of some African leagues in 2019/20 season.
For only their domestic champions

Ghana-$42,000
South Africa- $96,000
Nigeria- $87,000
Ivory Coast -$56,000
Egypt- $63,000
Zambia-$24,000
Tunisia-$368,000
Angola -$46,000
Tanzania-$50,205.
Zimbabwe-$15,000
Guinea-$50,000
Morocco-$100,000

Apart from Ghana, all these nations Share their prize money according to positions in the league.

Example like Nigeria in 2019 league, their total prize money was 150m Naira ( 392,000USD). Enyimba who won the league was awarded 30M Naira ( $78,000) with bottom side Bayelsa state club given 3M Naira ( $7,800 USD). The case continues in Other nations like South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria,Tunisia EtC.
