We’re selling chickens to survive’- Zimbabwe National Team captain reveals

Zimbabwe international defender Ian Nekati has revealed they have resorted to selling chickens in order to survive whilst their league has been inactive for more than one year.

Nekati, 31, has emerged as one of the leading performers for the national team since making his debut in 2019 and captained the side at the African Nations Championship last year.

The right-back was subject of interest from DStv Premiership sides Baroka and Cape Town City but eventually joined Chicken Inn from ZPC Kariba after failing to agree on personal terms.

However, his rising career has come to a dramatic standstill since the Covid-19 pandemic halted life and professional football in Zimbabwe.

The way football stopped things are not okay, we’re selling chickens to survive,” Nekati said in a video from the FUZ.

“At times we sell groceries from the boots of our cars while hiding from authorities, this can’t be life.”

Members of the Football Union of Zimbabwe echoed the struggling of Nekati with many explaining the match bonuses and travel allowances they received often played a crucial role in their daily lives.
