Karim Benzema equals Real legend’s record

Karim Benzema has drawn level with Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez in the Champions League’s all-time goalscoring charts.

Benzema joined former Los Blancos teammate and captain Raul in fourth position on the all-time Champions League goalscoring standings on Tuesday when he netted a well-taken equaliser in Los Blancos’ 1-1 semi-final first-leg draw against Chelsea.

Following his strike against the Blues, the former France international has now netted 71 times in the competition – a return that places him behind only Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He scored his first Champions League goal on debut back in 2005 while on the books of Olympique Lyonnais and netted 12 times in 19 appearances for the Ligue 1 side in the competition, before joining Real in 2009.

Since moving to the Santiago Bernabeu, the 33-year-old has added a further 59 goals in 110 UCL to his name, including one in Real Madrid’s triumph over Liverpool in the 2017/18 final, and boasts four winners’ medals to his name.
