African star urged to snub Arsenal move
Former Inter Milan and Netherlands playmaker Wesley Sneijder has told a certain African star not to sign for Arsenal in this window.
Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana is rumoured to be seeking a move away from Ajax Amsterdam, with the Gunners said to be keen on acquiring the 25-year-old’s services.
However, it seems not everyone wants to see that move transpire
“I would rather not see him at Arsenal,” retired Netherlands legend Sneijder told Dutch publication Voetbal International Live. “It is a fantastic club, but it has slipped in recent years. I’d rather see him play at Real Madrid or FC Barcelona.”
According to Transfermarkt, the shot-stopper is valued at €30 million (R497 million), with Arsenal reportedly looking for competition for current No. 1 Bernd Leno.
Onana featured just 20 times in the Eredivisie last season, keeping nine clean sheets before being handed a 12-month ban in February for taking a banned substance. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport recently reduced the suspension to nine months following an appeal.
The shot-stopper will thus be allowed to compete once again in November, and may only start training in September.
Sneijder criticised the verdict, though, believing that even the reduced ban is still too long.
“Let that boy start preparing. He has already had his sentence, right?” he added. “If he has missed half a year, it is fine, right? If you reduce it (the ban), you are actually admitting that you have made a mistake.”
