“There is history to be made tonight” – South Africa captain Ronwen Williams

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams is aware of the history that potentially awaits South Africa ahead of tonight’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.

South Africa are on the brink of progressing to the next round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and know that a win over neighbours Zimbabwe on Thursday could seal their passage, depending on results elsewhere.

The national team currently sits atop the Group G standings with 10 points from four matches, which is one more than nearest rivals, Ghana, who are set to face Ethiopia at the Orlando Stadium earlier in the day.

Should Ghana lose to Ethiopia, and South Africa beat Zimbabwe, Bafana Bafana will automatically progress to the next round. If Ghana beat Ethiopia, Hugo Broos side must defeat the Warriors and then avoid defeat against the Black Stars on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s encounter, captain Ronwen Williams revealed that there was a positive mood in the camp and that he and his teammates were aware of the history they could make if they go on to qualify for the World Cup.
