2022 U-20 WWCQ: Ghana book qualification after completing double over Ethiopia

Ghana has booked qualification for the 2022 Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 5-1 aggregate win over Ethiopia.

The Black Princesses edged the Lucy of Ethiopia 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the second leg of the final round of qualifying after a 3-0 win in the first leg two weeks ago.

A first half double from Abdulai Salamatu was all Ghana needed to make their qualification a formality after coming into the game with a big lead from the first leg. Aregash got the consolation for the visitors.

Salamatu, who also bagged a brace in the first leg in Ethiopia, opened the scoring after just two minutes with a chip over the goalkeeper.

The Bagabaga Ladies attacker then doubled Ghana’s lead with a tight finish at the near post that the goalkeeper should have been keeping out.

Aregash headed in firmly from a set-piece from the middle of the box in 29 minutes to make it 2-1. Ethiopia then drew parity, but the equalizer was flagged offside.

Ghana finished the game with 10 players as goalkeeper Konlan Cynthia Fiindib was sent off for handling the ball with her hands outside the box.

The Black princesses held on to win 2-1 and qualify for a six successive U-20 Women’s World Cup final tournament.
