“Ghana can win the World Cup”- John Painstil

Ghana legend and former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach John Paintsil has insisted the Black Stars can win the FIFA World Cup after beating Nigeria to qualify for the tournament.

An early goal from Thomas Partey was enough to secure the Black Stars a place in Qatar as they beat the Super Eagles via the away goals rule with a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their qualifying play-off on Tuesday.

This result was seen as a massive upset as Otto Addo’s side eliminated the Nigerians in front of their own fans in Abuja, which led to some home supporters raiding the pitch and vandalising the Moshood Abiola National stadium.

With Ghana having booked their ticket to Qatar later this year, former Black Stars and Fulham right-back Paintsil is optimistic the current squad can win the prestigious tournament at some point.

“Ghana can win the World Cup,” he said on a SuperSport broadcast.

“If this team is kept for long, they can win the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.”

Despite that backing from Paintsil, Ghana manager Addo insisted his side had some luck in beating their competition and qualifying for the global showpiece.

“I am really delighted, exulted that it was a tough match, we found our way through we had big problems, especially in the first half,” the 46-year-old told Joy Sports Ghana.

“And we made some changes, the players adapted very well.

“They [Nigeria] had some good chances.

“Our goalkeeper was there when we needed him. The defensive line was outstanding. We had a little bit of luck also.”
