StarTimes spends over 10 million cedis on GPL Matches-General Manager

StarTimes Spends About $1,000,000 To Produce GPL Games: The general manager of StarTimes Ghana, the official broadcaster of the Ghana Premier League, Mrs. Akofa Benson, claims that her organization spends approximately $1 million USD on production costs to air live matches of the nation’s top soccer league.

The rights were up for grabs in December 2019, and StarTimes prevailed over Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the country’s public broadcaster.

The GBC proposal also included requirements, such as a revenue split on any title sponsorships the GFA obtained for its competitions (GBC sought a 20% share), and after four seasons, the head of StarTimes Ghana thinks the GFA made the right decision.

“In 2016, there were just one or two live games. Now, Mrs. Akofa noted, “We are showing four live games per match-week, and sometimes we even show five matches in a week.”

“No Ghanaian media outlet was interested in the domestic league when we first arrived. However, we made the decision to do all the heavy lifting because we saw the potential of the local game and decided to invest extensively in its production and promotion.

“We invest a million dollars on average on generating games for a season. Then there comes the portion where you are advertising on billboards, television, and radio. Today, the GPL has emerged from a time when no one wanted to be linked with it or a part of it, she continued.

The upcoming 2023–24 season will be StarTimes’ fifth season as the Ghana Premier League’s official broadcaster.
