Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has admitted that the Ministry has had challenges with payment to contractors with respect to the delay in commissioning Youth Resource Centres across several locations in the country.

He said this in his meeting with the media to address several issues in the sports industry notably the Norway Scandal involving persons who allegedly posed as para-athletes to compete in a marathon in Norway but failed to show up for the event with nine of the 11-member contingent proceeding to abscond.

On the above mentioned issue, Honourable Ussif distanced himself from the issue stating that he “can’t take responsibility” for the scandal because due process wasn’t followed.

However, several Youth Resource Centres have been left to degrade after significant investment was committed to the project and Honourable Ussif stated that money issues had prevented the Ministry from commissioning them for use.

“Six of the 10 youth resource centres, both phase one and phase two are ongoing. We’ve had challenges with some of them I must admit with regards to payment to the contractors and now because the contractors have not handed over the project to us, we can’t go and use it because we have not commissioned them.”

“The challenges have to do with payment of their certificate but we are working very hard to make sure they get their payment so they can go back and complete them for us to put them to good use.”

Following public uproar over the state of the 10 Youth Resource Centres promised by the government, Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif provides an update on the projects, stating that work has been delayed on some of them due to their failure to pay contractors.#CitiSports pic.twitter.com/wcYAeUEFAp
