THE INSIDE HISTORY: Ghana Premier League Clubs and year of establishment.

Historically the game of football was introduced into the Gold Coast region towards the close of the 19th century by merchants from Europe.

Sailors during their leisure times played football among themselves and sometimes with selected side of the indigenous people.

On record the first ever Ghanaian football club was formed ( Excelsior) in April 1903 by Jamaican born-British, Mr Briton ,who was then the Head Teacher of Philip Quaicoe Goverment Boys School in Cape Coast.

Football later became popular in Ghana in 1920’s.

It arrived in Accra in 1910, Sekondi 1916, Kumasi way back in 1930’s and some parts of Ghana.

Football is the most popular sports in Ghana , currently 18 clubs and 48 clubs competing in the Premier league and National Division One league Competition respectively.

The first recognized national league was played in 1958 with notable clubs like ) ( Hearts , Kotoko, 11 wise, Hasacaas, Dwarfs, Vipers Etc)
Hearts won the league on that faithful season.

In Ghana Hearts of oak are the oldest existing club in the premier league followed by Kotoko with Dwarfs third on the charts whiles Karela United remains the youngest team currently in the premier league.

7.Ashantigold SC – 1976 (44yrs)

8.Aduana Stars -1985 (35yrs)

9.King Faisal -1992 (28yrs)

10. inter Allies -1995 (25yrs)

11.Liberty Prof – 1996 (24yrs)

12.Elmina Sharks -1998 (22yrs)

13.WAFA SC-1999 (21yrs)

14.Berekum Chelsea -2004 (16yrs)

15.Legon Cities- 2005 (10 yrs)

16.Medeama SC – 2008 (12yrs)

17.Dreams Fc -2009 (11yrs)

18.Karela United -2014 (6yrs)
