Mbappe makes history with Barca hat-trick
Kylian Mbappe has claimed a small piece of history for himself and Paris Saint-Germain following his unprecedented hat-trick against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
Mbappe (22) was destroyer-in-chief for PSG on Tuesday night when his well-taken hat-trick inspired the reigning Ligue 1 champions to a 4-1 Round of 16 first-leg victory over Barcelona at the LaLiga giants’ vaunted home ground.
In doing so, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner achieved a feat that no other player has achieved by becoming the first-ever opposing player to net a treble against the Spanish outfit in the knockout phase of the Champions League, and only the third-ever in any stage of the competition.
His three goals, which followed Lionel Messi’s opener for Barca, also saw PSG become the first-ever French team to record an away win over the Blaugrana, with the LaLiga side having won eight and drawn two of their previous 10 meetings against French opposition, per Opta.
Ronald Koeman’s side now looks set to suffer an early exit from the competition but the Dutchman could draw inspiration from the two sides’ previous meeting in 2017, when Barca completed a remarkable 6-5 aggregate victory after overturning a 4-0 first-leg defeat.
