Motsepe set to be confirmed as CAF President
Mamelodi Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe is set to contest the CAF presidency elections unopposed following the Court of Arbitrations’ ruling on incumbent Ahmad Ahmad.
Motsepe is all but confirmed the new president of the Confederation of African Football, which is set to formally take place in Rabat, Morocco on March 12.
The Sundowns president is the only remaining candidate in the elections set to be held at the CAF Elective Assembly on Friday, after the withdrawal of his three West African rivals last week.
Augustin Senghor of Senegal, Jacques Anouma of Ivory Coast and Ahmed Yahya of Muaritania all stood down from opposing the South African business man in favour of a uniting behind him.
Ahmad, who took over the reigns from Issa Hayatou in 2017 and was intent on running for re-election, has also seen his five-year FIFA ban from all football-related activities reduced to two years by the CAS on Monday.
The Malagasy football administrator, who will temporarily be suceeded by Congo’s Constant Omari as acting CAF President, was due to be the only remaining challenger of Motsepe at the upcoming elections had his appeal to throw out the charges in its entirety been successful.
However, the reduction now all but secures the local mining magnate his seat on the throne of African football, with his son Tlhopie Motsepe set to succeed him at the Tshwane giants.
