Chelsea star Hodson-Odoi to snub England for Ghana?

Chelsea and England winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has revealed that he could consider switching allegiance to Ghana in the future.

Hudson-Odoi, 20, has won three caps for England since making his debut as an 18-year-old in March 2019 but was overlooked for the nation’s squad for the upcoming 2020U UEFA European Championship.

Despite being capped, the London-born winger, who has represented the Three Lions across all age-group levels, remains eligible to represent Ghana through his parents and is the son of former Hearts of Oak midfielder, Bismark Odoi.

This is due to FIFA’s recent rule change on eligibility which would allow Hudson-Odoi to switch allegiances on the condition that he has not made more than three appearances for England before his 21st birthday.

The 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup winner is currently enjoying his off-season in Ghana and opened the door to a potential Black Stars call-up after being questioned on the possibility of representing the African nation.

“I think when you’re young, you have the opportunity to play for England throughout all the years, from under 15 to under 16 all the way up,” he said, as reported by Joy Sports.

“When they gave me the opportunity to come I was in the country already. It’s something that I already had in my mind, set on already playing for England.

“So it was the thing, choosing Ghana or England, and at the end of the day I said I always had the right people around me who always advise me – what’s right, what’s wrong. England came and I said ‘Yeah, let me go and play for my country.

“But I said Ghana is my home as well, so we’ll see, we’ll see. You’ll never know, so.”

Hudson-Odoi would not be the first England star to change allegiances to Ghana if he were to do so, with the likes of Andy Yiadom, Kwame Poku and Tarique Fosu among the other players who have made the switch in recent years.
