It was the Cristiano Ronaldo show at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 4-1.
Ronaldo was thrown straight into the starting line-up along with Jadon Sancho who got his first start at Old Trafford while the Magpies were without Callum Wilson.
The Red Devils dominated the early exchanges but struggled to break down a Newcastle side, who were happy to sit back and defend.
The hosts eventually got their reward on the stroke of halftime when Ronaldo slotted home from two yards out after the goalkeeper was unable to save Mason Greenwood’s shot.
Newcastle then silenced the Old Trafford crowd on 56 minutes when Allan Saint-Maximin slipped in Javi Manquilo, who fired into the bottom corner.
That joy was short-lived through as Ronaldo restored the hosts’ lead six minutes later with a low strike through the legs of Freddie Woodman.
Bruno Fernandes added a third goal for the Red Devils with nine minutes left on the clock as the midfielder sent a superb strike into the top corner from distance, before substitute Jesse Lingard completed the rout in the 92nd minute with a clinical finish.
