Zimbabwe is facing disqualification from the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after the country’s government interfered in football administration.
The Zimbabwe Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) dissolved the entire board of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) earlier last week due to a number of allegations.
Among others, the SRC said “several incidences of gross incompetence on the part of ZIFA”, alleged sexual harassment of female referees and claims of fraud, accounted for the decision to disband the association.
World football governing body, Fifa has said it is keenly monitoring the developments in Zimbabwe and maybe coming in soon to make a decision.
Fifa highly abhors government interference in football administration and may ban Zimbabwe from all international competitions, including the 2021 Afcon, if the government does not back down on its decision.
A Fifa spokesperson told NewZimbabwe.com Friday that they are closely monitoring the situation before coming up with a position after both ZIFA and SRC communicated to them.
Zimbabwe is in Group B of the 2021 Afcon alongside Senegal, Malawi, and Guinea.
The Warriors are expected to face the Teranga Lions of Senegal in their opening game on January 10, 2022.
