CAMEROON 2021: The AFCON curse continues as Algeria exit group stages

Current African champions of the AFCON, Algeria exits the 2021 edition of Africans biggest international football competition from the group stages.

The tournament hosted in Cameroon in five (5) cities has seen some minnors showcase good football played on the African continent.

Algeria, coming into the 2021 tournament as the winners of 2019 edition, which was the 32nd held in Egypt when they beat Senegal by just a goal, scored by Baghdad Bounedjah.

The Dessert Warriors finishes forth with just a point and a goal scored in three games in this year’s AFCON, which means they are eliminated from the competition.

Now, these are some of the statistics the previous winners of the tournament has produced in the next tournament they play:

From 2010-2019, the winners of the AFCON has failed to go past the round of 16 stage.

Egypt  who won the 2010 trophy failed to qualify for the competition in Gabon & Equatorial Guinea in 2012.

Also, Nigeria   won the AFCON in 2013 hosted in South Africa but also failed to qualify for the final competition in 2015, Equatorial Guinea.

Only Cameroon went passed the group stages abut were eliminated by Nigeria  in the R16 in 2019 when they were beaten 3-2.

The 2019 winners are out after suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Ivorians.
