The 2022 World Cup African qualifiers playoff game between Ghana and Nigeria will be moved away from the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
This is to allow for preparatory works ahead of the celebration of Ghana’s Independence Day in March at the venue, Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) has said in a statement addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The Black Stars were expected to host the Super Eagles in the first leg on March 24, 2022, at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium with the return fixture coming in five days time in Nigeria.
The GFA has now been urged to consider the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium for the game.
The winner of the tie in the two legs pick one of Africa’s five slots at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
NSA’s statement says: “I respectfully write to inform you of the decision by the State Protocol at the Jubilee House to hold this year’s Independence Anniversary Celebration at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on 6th March, 2022.
“…the Ghana Football Association is accordingly informed of this decision and advised to resort to other venues preferably Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium respectively for the March, 2022 Fifa World Cup playoff qualifier between the Black Stars of Ghana and the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
“In view of this, the Cape Coast Sports Stadium will be closed down to sporting activities to enable exterior and beautification works to be done for the Commemoration.”
