A member of Ghana’s parliament, Patrick Boamah, has urged the senior national team to forfeit their 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying play-offs tie with Nigeria scheduled for late March.
Boamah believes the Black Stars team is inferior to the Super Eagles based on their performances at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The West African powerhouses were pitted against each other in the draw last week with the winner over two ties picking one of Africa’s five World Cup slots.
The first leg will be played in Ghana on March 24 before the return fixture comes off five days later in Nigeria.
The Black Stars exited the Afcon at the group stage for the first time in 16 years and did not win a game for the first time ever in the 23 editions they’ve participated in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Nigeria won all their group stage games playing some impressive football but came out stuck in the round of 16, suffering a shock 1-0 loss to Tunisia.
Ghanaians have lost belief in the Black Stars to deliver World Cup qualification after the dismal performance in Cameroon.
“If need be we should dissolve our national team and prepare a team over the next five years,” Boamah said on the floor of parliament on Wednesday in a discussion of the Black Stars’ underwhelming performance in Cameroon.
“We should not waste our time playing Nigeria in the next World Cup qualifier.
“Look at the team Nigeria has, even though they are out of the tournament I don’t think with this current set-up, we can stand the Nigerians.”
