Five Sudanese footballers reportedly drowned after their boat sank on the Nile River while on their way to a match.
Tragedy struck when a vessel carrying a third-tier side from Sudan called Al-Nahla capsized while transporting the team to play a match, according to the country’s official news agency SUNA.
It is reported that the boat was travelling from the city of Shendi to El-Metamm, where the club was set to play a fixture against Al-Jarif.
It is said that the whole team was on board when the boat sank in the Nile, north of the capital Khartoum.
With rescue teams having been dispatched, the search for the five bodies reportedly continues.
Although it has not been confirmed how the boat capsized, it is understood that this is not an uncommon occurrence on the river as it tends to flood during the summer season, when water levels surge and currents become more dangerous.
This is in addition to the fact that many of the watercrafts used in the region are widely considered to be old and unsafe.
