Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has suffered a major blow in his bid to sell Chelsea.
The Russian oligarch has been looking to sell the Blues as rumours of potential sanctions against began to loom.
According to the BBC, the British government has now frozen Abramovich’s assets in the United Kingdom, including the football side.
The sanction ensures that the entrepreneur cannot sell the club until the ban is lifted, which would be a bitter blow for the 55-year-old who reportedly had a list of potential buyers looking to negotiate.
Chelsea have been given a special licence to continue with football-related activities, but will not be able to sell tickets to matches, with season ticket holders the only people now allowed to attend matches.
Per UK-based journalist Steven Swindon, the club can pay players and staff and cover expenses for travelling and security, but that is where the spending ends.
“Given the significant impact that today’s sanctions would have on Chelsea football club and the potential knock-on effects of this, the Government has this morning published a licence which authorises a number of football-related activities to continue at Chelsea,” a statement released by gov.uk read.
“This includes permissions for the club to continue playing matches and other football related activity which will in turn protect the Premier League, the wider football pyramid, loyal fans and other clubs.
“This licence will only allow certain explicitly named actions to ensure the designated individual is not able to circumvent UK sanctions. The licence will be kept under constant review and we will work closely with the football authorities.”
