Lionel Messi claimed yet more silverware on Wednesday after leading Argentina to their second major trophy in 12 months, seeing him match one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s feats in the process.
In July 2021, the South American nation ended its 18-year silverware drought when they secured the Copa America title with a 1-0 triumph over Brazil.
Less than a year later, La Albiceleste have now secured a second international trophy after defeating Italy 3-0 to win the 2022 Finalissima cup, otherwise known as the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, which has the most recent Copa America and UEFA European Championship winners going head to head for the prize.
Messi was the star of the show, walking away with the Man of the Match award after recording two assists, for Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala’s strikes, to give Lionel Scaloni’s side a comfortable win over the Azzurri.
This victory ensures that the Paris Saint-Germain forward has now tied Ronaldo’s tally of international trophies, with both having won two major trophies with their respective nations.
“It was a beautiful final, full of Argentines. What we experienced here was beautiful,” the Argentina captain said, per the Daily Mail.
“We’re here to fight anyone. Today was a nice test because Italy is a great team.
“We knew it was going to be a nice match and a nice setting to be champion.”
