The Vice-President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), Fuseni Dauda, has called on the organisers of the Ghana Boxing League to ensure that experienced amateur boxers are engaged in the competition and also remunerated for their services.

He said the move by the organisers, Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and Imax Boxing Promotions to include amateur boxers from the security services without recourse to the GBF was improper and had the potential to destroy amateur boxing in the country.

Mr Dauda told Graphic Sports that as the body responsible for developing amateur boxing in Ghana, it was improper for the league’s organisers to go behind the GBF to speak to these security agencies for raw talents to fight in the league for money as it would deprive the nation of an opportunity to develop the best amateur boxers who could represent Ghana at international competitions.

“If you watch the league closely you will realise that boxers of different weight classes are paired up and it has led to a lot of mismatches, which could be injurious to many upcoming boxers,” he lamented in an interview with Graphic Sports.

“If this is not nipped in the bud, it will bring many boxers whose skills are not well honed and whose only resolve to the sport is to make money,” he said.

He called for a meeting between the GBF and the league’s organisers to discuss how to deploy the best amateur boxers to compete and also use the upcoming competition to develop the amateur boxers for future international competitions.
