Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their spot in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup after playing to a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland.
The tightly contested match took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 24,000 spectators. The single point earned was enough for Randy Waldrum’s team to finish second in Group B.
Having previously achieved a thrilling victory against co-hosts Australia, Nigeria entered the match with confidence, knowing that a draw would secure their advancement and equal their performance in the 2019 World Cup.

With their prolific striker Asisat Oshoala fit to play, only one change was made to the team that impressed the world in the previous game, with Ifeoma Onumonu making way to the bench.
The Republic of Ireland, in their first major tournament, showcased their ability to compete with the world’s best teams. Determined to make their final appearance in the group count, Vera Pauw’s side fought hard. Heather Payne returned to the defence after overcoming a pre-game injury concern, and midfielder Lily Agg earned her first World Cup start.
With this result, Nigeria move forward in the competition, looking to make further strides in the Women’s World Cup.
