Legon Cities Football Club (FC) has issued a heartfelt appeal to both the media and the public, urging them to approach the coverage of goalkeeper William Essu’s health condition with discretion and sensitivity.
In a statement released today, the club disclosed that every conceivable measure is being taken to address the player’s current situation.
Recent reports have suggested that Essu has been grappling with an ailment for an extended period and has allegedly felt overlooked by his club, Legon Cities. Consequently, he has made a public plea to the Football Association (FA) for the resolution of unpaid bonuses.
Images of Essu, a prominent Ghana U-23 goalkeeper, have been widely disseminated across various social media platforms, sparking discussions in the media about the salaries of Ghana Premier League footballers.
However, the club’s Communication Division has advocated for responsible reporting on this matter, emphasizing the importance of respect and care in handling sensitive situations.
This statement closely follows the circulation of a letter written by Essu, addressed to the Head Coach of the Black Meteors, Ibrahim Tanko.
In the correspondence, the 21-year-old goalkeeper implored the Ghana Football Association to disburse the outstanding winning bonuses owed to the U-23 team following their triumph over Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March 2023.
Essu underscored the urgency of undergoing another crucial health check-up, citing his current financial inability to cover the associated expenses.
He disclosed that he has already depleted his savings in a bid to seek treatment, regrettably without success.
This plea comes in the wake of the recent passing of Essu’s teammate and fellow goalkeeper, Sylvester Sackey, who was confirmed to have succumbed to an illness.
