The leading contractor has abandoned work on the Axim Sports Complex over delayed payments.
The project which is funded by the Central Government under the National Youth Authority initiative was supposed to be completed last year.
This came to light when our media team led by Johnson Blay inspected the progress of work at Axim, the municipal capital of Evalue Ajomoro Gwira.
Currently, work on the project has slowed down or stalled with some abandoned by the contractors.
The multi-purpose Youth Centre was set to be completed in September 2023 according to the project consultants, Ugart Consult but up to now nothing has been completed.
Work on the facility originally began on April 3, 2018 and was expected to be completed in nine months. However, challenges with funding affected the commencement of the project until March 2022.
When Domesticsportsgh.com visited the facility on Thursday May 16, 2024 the facility was at 85% completion despite the abandonment of the project by the contractor.
In an exclusive interview with us, the main contractor Bismark Oboubi of Bismat Ent revealed that the project was supposed to be completed in April 2023.
He identified delayed payment as a major factor slowing the progress of work on the project.
According to Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide, the NYA boss disclosed in 2023 that an estimated Ghc18.million has been invested in the project since 2018.
The project when completed will have 5,000 seating capacity with VIP box, a 35-seater presidential box, control rooms, changing rooms for match officials, wash rooms with five cubicles each while the locker room has 26 lockers for each team.
