President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed pride in Ghana’s upgraded sporting infrastructure, which has positioned the nation as a hub for international sports.
Delivering his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, January 3, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the development of modern AstroTurf pitches nationwide and the rehabilitation of key sports facilities.
He credited these upgrades for Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra, stating, “The construction of some 150 Astroturf pitches across the country and the rehabilitation of existing stadia has bolstered Ghana’s standard as a hub for international sport including hosting successfully, despite all odds, the 2023 All African Games.”
The historic event, held from March 8 to 23, 2024, welcomed over 13,000 athletes and officials from across Africa.
The competitions took place at ten venues, with Ghana achieving a remarkable haul of 69 medals.
The government invested approximately $195 million in infrastructure for the games, which included the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex and the completed University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
