The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly considering appointing a technical director to support Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

The 47-year-old coach’s future remains uncertain following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The four-time African champions, for the first time in two decades, failed to qualify for the continent’s most prestigious tournament after finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points, recording three draws and three defeats across six games.

The disappointing campaign has put the GFA under immense pressure to reevaluate its coaching structure. Addo, who signed a three-year contract with a two-year extension option in March 2024, has faced calls for dismissal.

In response, the GFA held a lengthy meeting with Addo and his technical team, announcing that further consultations with stakeholders would determine his fate.

However, media reports now suggest that the GFA is exploring the option of appointing a technical director to work alongside Addo as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. If this plan is implemented, Addo is likely to retain his role, though significant changes are expected in the backroom staff.

Meanwhile, Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director of the GFA, has confirmed that Otto Addo is owed four months of unpaid wages.

“It is true we owe Otto Addo. As of the last update from the Sports Ministry, there are salary arrears, which unfortunately is not a new issue,” Twum said in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports.

“We have held several meetings with the Ministry about the payments. Otto Addo understands the challenges, and we are working to resolve the issue.”

Following the disappointing AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars will aim to bounce back with a stronger performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, starting with matches against Chad and Madagascar in March.
