He highlighted that robust measures would be implemented to enhance transparency and efficiency in the sports sector.

Dr. Awaah made these remarks following the announcement of a major restructuring in Ghana’s sports administration.Watch live sports online

He said this in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports.

Well, clearly, the heartbeat of our nation is soccer.

And then the sporting sector, under his excellency, John Dramani Mahama, would want to ensure that we get things right within the sporting sector, just like we want to do in other sports.

Now, issues of accountability, clearly, so for the past 8 years, it hasn’t been rosy for the sporting sector.

We’ve had issues of funds intended for building infrastructure that were not used rightly.

We have had successive failures in our bids to qualify for Afcon. And even when we go, we put up our very poor performances.

And all of those are issues that our Ghanaians are concerned about.

Now, it wouldn’t be wrong for Ghanaians to want to expect that the new regime would bring in some changes that will bring the heartbeat of the sports back.

And we, as a government, are committed to ensuring that we’re putting a lot of energy.

Energy here would mean human and non-human resources, intended to ensure that the sport comes back strongly, and that would give the kind of excitement that Ghanaians have always had within the sporting sector.

President John Dramani Mahama, on Saturday, Jan 11, 2025, revealed the government’s decision to separate the Ministry of Youth and Sports into two standalone entities.

The newly established Ministry of Sports and Recreation will now focus exclusively on managing the country’s sports sector, while the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment will oversee youth-related initiatives.

This restructuring is part of a broader governmental reorganization, which has reduced the number of ministries to 23, down from 30 under the previous administration.

President Mahama is expected to announce the country’s 28th Sports Minister next week as part of the next round of ministerial appointments. Leading contenders for the role include Nii Lante Vanderpuije, a former Sports Minister, and Wisdom Kobla Woyome, chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports during the eighth parliament.
