The Ghana Police Service, in partnership with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated Sports Policing Unit aimed at enhancing safety and security at football matches.

This move follows the recent tragic incident during the Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park, where fan violence led to the death of Yaw Frimpong, a Kotoko supporter.
During a closed-door meeting with club representatives, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare outlined strategic measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The newly formed Sports Policing Unit will work closely with supporter groups, deploy trained security personnel at match venues, and enhance intelligence operations to curb potential threats.
Additionally, sports policing will be integrated into police training programs to ensure officers are well-prepared to manage football-related security issues effectively.
Following the meeting with the 18 Premier League clubs on Thursday, all teams pledged to strictly enforce safety protocols on match days to ensure a secure environment for players and fans alike
