In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the NSA clarified that despite a request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to use the facility, the request was denied due to an ongoing “structural audit.”

The NSA also addressed concerns about preventing Hearts of Oak from hosting Nations FC at the stadium, explaining that necessary preparations and protocols needed for a successful match could not be met in time.

The NSA assured fans that the venue would be available for the weekend’s matches, including the fixture between Hearts of Oak and Medeama SC.

“The NSA received the written request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) late in the afternoon on Friday, 28th March, 2025. Taking into consideration the preparations and other required protocol arrangements needed for a successful game, it was practically impossible for the game to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium,” the statement read.

“We have engaged all major stakeholders to evaluate the possibility of hosting any football match at the Accra Sports Stadium. In this regard, we would like to confirm that the Accra Hearts of Oak vs. Nations FC match will not be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.”

The statement also noted that all other fixtures, including the weekend game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Medeama FC, would only be approved after the structural audit is completed and recommendations are made. The NSA further pledged to update the public and stakeholders once the stadium is cleared for football-related activities.

After a month-long closure, the stadium had reopened for Ghana’s AFCON 2025 Qualifier against Niger. However, following the end of the qualifying campaign, it was closed again for pitch maintenance. The venue also hosted Ghana’s 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers this past March.

The Accra Sports Stadium was last renovated in 2018 in preparation for the Women’s AFCON tournament, which Ghana hosted.
