Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club head coach Abdul Karim Zito has doubled down on his controversial stance against ball playing goalkeepers.
While addressing a question regarding the improvement in Kotoko’s goalkeeping department since taking over as head coach, the veteran trainer indicated that his stance against ball playing goalkeepers like Andre Onana has contributed to the improvement while touting his ability to develop goalkeepers.
Zito, then coaching Dreams FC, made the headlines earlier this season when he criticized Dreams FC goalkeeper Gidios Aseako for doing “Onana Things” after Aseako committed errors while playing out from the back that led to a Dreams FC draw against Kpando Heart of Lions and he brought the subject back in a post-game interview after Kotoko’s 4-1 win over Dreams FC.
“I also have the knowledge in coaching goalkeepers. I coached Felix Annan, I coached Philemon McCarthy…during that period we didn’t have specific coaches for goalkeepers.”
“It was the same coach who worked with the goalkeepers. There are certain things in goalkeeping I don’t like like this Onana issue I don’t like.”
“We don’t have a good field here like Europe that you can dribble and go… they[goalkeepers] are the last line of defense and the first line of attack so they are very very important so day in, day out, he [Kotoko goalkeeper’s coach Joe Baah] has been working on them that is the magic.”
