Ghanaian boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, will once again be the recipient of a World Boxing Council (WBC) award when the WBC’s “The Year of Africa” celebrations continue with a mega fight show in Accra next month.

The bill, hosted by Sharaf Mahama’s Legacy Rise Sports Promotions and Amir Khan Promotions, is scheduled for the Bukom Boxing Arena on June 13, which is exactly 21 years to the day since Nelson, 66, became the first African to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.

The “Professor” will be honoured for his illustrious boxing career and legendary achievements.
Nelson first won the WBC featherweight world title in December 1984 when he stopped Wilfredo Gomez in Puerto Rico. He held on to the title until 1988, when he moved up to annex the super featherweight strap, which he twice won and reigned over until 1997.

His record of reigning as a world champion for over a decade is a unique milestone by an African that may never be surpassed.

Other accolades

Widely considered the greatest African boxer of all time, Nelson has received a lot of accolades from the WBC since his Hall of Fame induction alongside Mike Tyson, Sylvester Stallone and others in 2004, including the landmark recognition as the WBC’s greatest super featherweight of all time.

In 2018, Nelson was also presented with a silver vase and two honorary boxing belts by the WBC during his 60th birthday celebration at a fight show in Accra.
The Year of Africa 2025 festivities are designated by the WBC to commemorate the history, achievements, magnificence, and splendour of African boxing. A maiden ABU/WBC Amateur Boxing tournament for African countries already took place in Lagos, Nigeria, in February.

The celebration will continue with a special fight night presented by former world champion and WBC world ambassador, Amir Khan, in partnership with the son of the President of Ghana, Sharaf Mahama, in Accra.

The card, codenamed “The Battle of the Beasts”, is headlined by the maiden WBC Africa bridgerweight championship between Nigerian/American, Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti and Ghana’s former national cruiserweight champion, Jacob “The Beast” Dickson.
