Renowned journalist Ekow Asmah, a member of the seven-member committee constituted by the Sports and Recreation Minister to probe into the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, made a shocking revelation in an interview on Max FM.

The boxer tragically died at the Korle-Bu teaching hospital, where he was hurried to after collapsing in the ring during a GBA-sanctioned bout on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
According to Mr Asmah, as part of the committee’s findings, it was discovered that the GBA has been operating illegally—it does not have the licence required by the National Sports Authority (NSA) to conduct its duties.

However, the current president of the GBA, Abraham Neequaye, bit back at the claims of Mr Asmah, questioning his pedigree to have been on the committee.

“When you take a look at him [Asmah], it is evident he has a problem. I don’t think… Excuse my words… I don’t think he is at the right level to be on the committee,” said the GBA boss, Mr Neequaye.

He wondered why the committee, the majority of whom support his opponents in an upcoming GBA election, after having made the findings privy only to the Sports Minister, showed copies of it to others.

The current administration of the National Sports Authority, led by Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, is investigating the claim of Mr Ekow Asmah regarding the GBA’s licence.
