The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), in partnership with United Civil Society Organisations for National Development (UCSOND) and the Nzema East Municipality LANet, funded by the Hewlett Foundation, celebrated Africa Union Anti-Corruption Day in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region of Ghana. Under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” the African Union Anti-Corruption Day (AUACD) highlights the continent’s commitment to fighting corruption under the 2003 AU Convention.

The event, which served as an educational outreach program, was held at Axim Girls Senior High and Axim Roman Catholic Junior High Schools in Axim. The program aimed to educate students and the public about corruption, whistleblowing, and the vital role youth play in fighting corruption. Members of the Nzema East Municipality Local Accountability Network (Nzema East Municipality LANet) advised the students to eschew corruption to avoid negative future implications. Members of the Nzema East Municipality LANet also encouraged the students to report corruption cases without fear since the Witness Protection Act 2018 (Act 975) protects individuals who are exposed to danger due to their roles as witnesses of corruption.

Some of the students speaking to the media expressed their willingness and what they can do as young people to report any corruption practices to deter people from engaging in the act in their communities, country, and Africa at large. They also indicated where to report corruption cases, including the Courts, the Police, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Traditional leaders, etc.

As good citizens, we should abstain from corrupt practices and ensure discipline.
