Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu has undergone surgery in Japan after sustaining a serious injury during Ghana’s friendly loss to the Blue Samurai last Friday, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed.
The Toulouse FC player fractured his ankle while attempting to clear a ball deep in his own half.
An accidental collision with an onrushing Japanese player left him in agony, prompting immediate medical attention before he was stretchered off and rushed to the Toyota Memorial Hospital.
The 25-year-old has since undergone a successful operation led by Black Stars medical head Dr Prince Pambo, who worked alongside Toulouse’s medical staff and a team of Japanese specialists.
Early examinations revealed a double fracture of his right tibia and fibula.
Abu will remain in Japan for about a week for monitoring and the first phase of his rehabilitation. A physiotherapist from the GFA has been assigned to stay with him throughout the initial recovery period.
In his absence, the Black Stars have moved on to South Korea with a 21-player squad for their next international assignment.
The injury is expected to sideline Abu for an extended spell and is likely to rule him out of the 2026 World Cup, a major setback for both club and country.
