The fallout from Uganda’s failure to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has seen two more senior players join Denis Onyango in announcing their retirement.
The Cranes finished third in Group B of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers behind Burkina Faso and Malawi after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to the latter in their final match of the campaign last month.
Following Uganda’s failure to reach the continent’s showpiece tournament, which is set to commence in January, captain Onyango, 35, announced that he had retired from international duty after amassing 80 caps to his name.
The East African nation is now facing a crisis in leadership after two more senior players, Hassan Wasswa and Michael Azira, both made themselves unavailable for future national team selections.
“Playing for the national team has been an honour and I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to represent my country and my family,” Azira announced, according to the Daily Monitor.
