WORLD NEWS: Didier Drogba celebrates Super League collapse
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has celebrated the collapse of the proposed European Super League.
On Tuesday evening, less than 72 hours after 12 of Europe’s biggest clubs announced the creation of the European Super League, the controversial competition all-but collapsed after the Premier League’s six representatives all withdrew their participation.
Drogba’s former side Chelsea were among those that had initially signed up for the breakaway tournament but withdrew following widespread condemnation, and the Ivory Coast star was quick to celebrate the decision of the Blues and their domestic rivals.
“Promotion, relegation, unexpected results is what drives the emotions of the game,” the 43-year-old tweeted on Wednesday evening. “Being together, as players, as fans… that’s what makes it the beautiful game.
“‘Little” Greece beating the “big” Portugal a few years ago, Crvena Zvezda beating my team Olympique Marseille or even Leicester City working hard to win the Premier League title in front of the ‘big four’ is what makes the beautiful game.
“Imagine all this effort and not being allowed to compete against other teams because you’re not one of them despite playing the same game. “It is a kind of discrimination. I’m glad this project is not happening for the sake of the beautiful game and our amazing fans all around the world.”
After the withdrawal of England’s six representative clubs, which was followed by Inter Milan, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid all formally pulling out as well, the competition was suspended indefinitely.
