Alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, the Buccaneers are the only other side in South African football history to have tasted Champions League success.

Pirates clinched the prestigious trophy back in 1995 and were losing finalists in last year’s CAF Confed Cup, narrowly losing out to RS Berkane.

After finishing sixth place in the DStv Premiership last season, new Orlando Pirates addition Tapelo Xoki believes there is no reason why the Buccaneers cannot return to continental glory.

“There’s already so much the club has achieved before my arrival,” Xoki told the club’s media.

“So I can’t say that I will achieve something the club has not achieved.

“But for me, it would mean a lot to ear the second star. To be in a group here you a regarded among the greats. Because even now, t this day. People will never stop talking about the class of 95 that won the Champions League.

“I believe with the squad w we have, in two or three season, it’s possible.”

Pirates will have to secure at least a top two finish to qualify for next season’s group stages and currently occupy second place in the standings.

“We’re not in the Champions league this season but we have a chance to correct that and then next season go for it.

“So for me, if I could be one of those names [that won the Champions League] it would mean a great deal to me. That’s the legacy I’m aiming for.”
