Karela United enhanced their chances of surviving relegation by beating champions FC Samartex on Sunday in match week 33 of the Ghana Premier League at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex.

The win means they are now 13th with 43 points while Samartex remain top with 58 points.

Karela United shot themselves into the lead when Welbeck Takyi headed magnificently from the far post inside 26 minutes.

The assist was a beautifully taken free kick from the Pride and Passioners’ captain, Mohammed Fatawu, from the right side of the box.

Deep into first half stoppage time, Abdul Latif held his nerves from the penalty spot to double the lead for the home side and send them into the break 2-0 up.

But the champions elect were not giving up just yet as they pulled one back just one minute after the half-time break. Seidu Abubakar was the goal scorer for FC Samartex.

Welbeck Takyi netted again in the 56th minute to restore the two goal lead for the hosts before Emmanuel Mamah scored to make it 3-2.

Solomon Aboahye scored the final goal in the 87th minute to end the game 4-2 in favour of Karela.

Karela United as set to end the season away at the Tarkwa Akoon Park against defending champions Medeama on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

Meanwhile, Samartex will end the season at home against Accra Lions in the game they will be crowned 2023/24 Ghana Premier League champions the same day.
