The former chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Prof. Stephen Adei has urged the incoming Mahama government to increase the betting tax to 50% to curb the alarming rise in betting activities among the youth.
In an exclusive interview with TV3 “Hot Issues ” monitored by Domesticsportgh, the development economist revealed that betting poses a significant threat to the well being of young people and its need for the government to do something to minimize mass involvement.
His opinion contrasts with the vision of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, who has already pledged to abolish the existing 10% tax in betting wins.
However, Prof Stephen Adei believes sport betting is a disastrous habit which shouldn’t be encouraged.
“Sin taxes like bet tax must be increased not reduced, I want them to be 50%. it’s a disastrous habit that should be discouraged, We shouldn’t allow the youth fall into it, and I want the government to increase these taxes because and it’s a way to discourage the youth from betting”, he said.
Most of the institutes including the Institute of Community Sustainability has also urged the incoming Mahama government to increase the betting tax to 50%.
