Chief Executive Officer of Data Bank, Kojo Addae Mensah has called on local football clubs to improve salaries in a bid to enhance the welfare and professionalism of footballers in the country.
His remarks come in the wake of the Ghana Football Association’s ( GFA) introduction of a new Ghana standard Player Contract ( GSPC), set to take effect from the 2025/26 season. The GSPC is part of efforts to standardize player agreements and promote better working conditions with the Ghana Premier League ( GPL).
Speaking in an exclusively interview with Luv FM, Addae Mensah suggested that clubs should be able to offer a minimum monthly salary of $200 (approximately GHC2,500) to players, particularly those entering the topflight for the first time.
” At the national level itself, our salaries are low, and that’s why it is so important that we try and inject money into it.
“For Ghana, an entry-level player coming into the Ghana Premier League for their first time should earn a minimum of $200. We can do it. That is my recommendation”.
Addae Mensah lamented that low wages in Ghana have become a driving factor behind the growth trend of players seeking opportunities in foreign leagues.
The seasoned financial expert also highlighted the salary disparities between Ghana and other African leagues, citing Tanzania and Ethiopia as examples of countries where footballers are better compensated.

“In Tanzania, players are earning between $3,000 and $5,000 monthly, and the highest-paid player, Stephen Aziz takes home $20,000. In Ethiopia, salaries range from $2,000 to $3,000”, he noted.
The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League will kick off in September.
