Mamelodi Sundowns close in on Kaiser Chiefs record
Mamelodi Sundowns will today match a record currently held by Kaizer Chiefs as the longest ever start to a PSL season without defeat, if they hold off Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Downs are yet to lose in the opening 18 league games and if they avoid defeat this afternoon will join Kaizer Chiefs in having the longest ever unbeaten start to a season.
Chiefs cruised to a 19-game start without losing in the 2014/15 season under then coach Stuart Baxter, on their way to being crowned champions in a season that saw them taste only three defeats from 30 games.
The Brazilians have also not been beaten in 27 games in all competitions, having thus far reached the quarterfinals of both the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League.
“The players are the right place and the preparations have been going well,” says Mokwena, ahead of the trip to Peter Mokaba Stadium this evening.
“We are moving into the game against TTM at the back of a Champions League encounter played the Champions League way – not the performance that we are proud of and happy with because we are never happy particularly if we don’t win a football match.
“Any other result for Sundowns except a win is a defeat. We are going into this game knowing that we must win it and have enough motivation to win it. We are focused and have a responsibility to the Mamelodi Sundowns institution to come out with a very good result.
“We are optimistic and we carry with us the hopes and dreams of many Masandawanas. We are in a good space and we are looking forward to a good match.
“Profiling TTM has not been very easy because, with Dylan Kerr coming in, there has been a couple of changes but we have been able to do our homework on them. They have a very good attack that has different personalities.”
With only a dozen games remaining, Downs are also in with a shout of becoming the first ever club to complete a domestic campaign without defeat and being dubbed ‘The Invincibles’.
