The White Knights had a dream start after Zizo gave them the lead in the sixth minute with a left-footed strike from the centre of the box after he was teed up by Achraf Bencharki.

Patrice Carteron’s troops were absorbing the pressure after going ahead, with El Entag doing the most attacking and they could not break them down, as Zamalek went to the half-time interval with a 1-0 lead.

The game got tighter in the early stages of the second stanza, with neither side giving anything away, however, Bencharki sealed the deal for Zamalek in the last two minutes after making it 2-0 with a header inside the box from Hamza Mathlouthi’s cross.

Tarek Hamed had a big chance to make it 3-0 for Zamalek after they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time but he was denied by the crossbar.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly’s run of five consecutive league titles came to an end after they were held by El Gouna in a six-goal thriller in a penultimate match at El Gouna Stadium.

The Red Devils had a horrible start, as they went behind in the seventh minute after Mohamed Naguib headed home a cross by Amr El Saadawy from a corner situation.

Al Ahly got a lifeline on the hour-mark after they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Hussein El Shahat inside the box and Ali Maaloul levelled matters from the spot-kick.

El Shahat eventually gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute with a close-range strike after a pass by Amr El Soleya, before Mohamed Sherif gave the Red Devils a third goal in the last ten minutes with a close-range finish after he was teed up by El Shahat.

Mahmoud Shabrawy gave El Gouna a lifeline after pulling a goal back in the last four minutes and there was drama in the closing minutes, as the hosts were awarded a penalty after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which allowed Omar El Said to make it 3-3.

Given that Zamalek won their game, a win for Mosimane’s men was not going to be enough to stop the White Knights from being crowned champions.
