Ghana picks up big wins against Egypt, Tunisia in African Youth Chess Championship

Ghana put up an amazing performance on Day One of the African Youth Chess Championships, recording major wins against chess giants Egypt and Tunisia, dominating the U-13 category and placing second in the U14 category. 

  • The Black Stars shine

The Ghanaian U12 squad make the country proud as they put up a phenomenal performance in both rounds, with 3 of the players – Samuel Pierrebourg, Amoako Philip Selikem Yao and Prasanna Lokesh Chandankhede – finished with a 100 percent win rate to place first, second and third respectively at the end of the first day.

Ghana’s rising star, Mawuli Richardson (1473) of the Knightmare Chess Club, Tema caused a major upset in the second round of the ongoing African Youth Chess Championships as he beat Egypt’s Wafa Hamed (2024) in an amazing game despite the enormous rating gap between them, ending the day with a perfect score of 2/2 and racking up an amazing 36.80 rating points to place second in the U-14 Open Category. 

  • Tears and Laughter

It was a very emotional opening day filled with mixed feelings as some players exited the playing arena with broad smiles while others met their coaches in tears.

These emotional times show us just how passionate these young ones are about the lovely game.
