FORMER Minister of Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has called on the boxing fraternity to come together to protect the sanctity of the sport in the country.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodioo Constituency explained that the image of boxing in the country could best be protected by boxers who risk their lives to enter the ring.
In recent times, the decision by managers and promoters to build records of their fighters by offering them walkover bouts have been criticised by many boxing enthusiasts who feel the canker has destroyed so many talents in the country.
Adding his voice to the call to end walkover bouts, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said administrators of the sport must avoid selfishness to enable them get the best out of their boxers.
“We have to come together to fight what is destroying boxing in the country and it is upon all of us to ensure that.
“But I don’t think anybody can best fight for the sanctity of boxing more than the boxers themselves and it is their duty to maintain the high standards of the sport,” the former minister told Graphic Sports.
Touching on how to make boxing great again in Ghana, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said the upcoming fighters in the country must be self-disciplined to be able to reach higher heights.
“If we want to make boxing great again in this country, then the boxers must be self-disciplined because that is where everything starts from,” he added.
