Head Coach of Al Ahly, Pitso Mosimane has questioned the long absence of Ghana’s biggest clubs from Africa’s biggest football stage.
Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko were regulars in the CAF Champions League decades ago but both struggle in recent times to even make the group stages.
Hearts won Africa’s biggest football competition in 2000; while also clinching the inaugural edition of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2004.
Asante Kotoko was also a dominant force in Africa winning the Champions League in 1971 and 1983; eventually being named as the continent’s club of the 20th century by the IFFHS.
Sadly, those glory days are far gone with these once big boys now failing to even make CAF’s second tier competitions.
3-time CAF Champions League winning Coach, Pitso Mosimane speaking in interview with Joy FM has reacted to the fall from grace of the two clubs.
He said “Where are the Porcupine Warriors. They used to terrorize everybody. Where is Phobia, where are those teams.
“When these two top teams play in Ghana, the streets are closed. Where are those teams in the CAF Champions League. Where are the top talents,” he concluded.
It’s likely the comments of Mosimane will revive an age-long conversation about the failures of both Kotoko and Hearts in Africa.
