Ethiopia 2-0 Egypt
Egypt slumped to a shock 2-0 loss against Ethiopia in the second of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier out at the Bingu National Stadium on Thursday.
The Pharaohs were without star man and captain Mohamed Salah due to injury, and trailed in the first few minutes through Dawa Hotessa Dukele.
Another strike well within a few minutes came for the Walias where Shemeles Bekele struck the second to take his side to the top of Group D and leave the Pharaohs bottom.
Nigeria 2-1 Sierra Leone
Nigeria escaped an early scare against Sierra Leone in their opening qualifier in Group A and recorded a 2-1 win in Abuja.
Jonathan Morsay put the visitors up and running in the earlier minutes, but Alex Iwobi equalized before Napoli’s Victor Osimhen netted the second and ultimate winner.
It was also a winning start in the qualifiers for the new mentor of the Super Eagles in Jose Peseiro, who replaced the sacked Gernot Rohr a few months ago.
Burundi 0-1 Cameroon
Five-time African champions Cameroon experienced a winning start to their qualifying journey in Group C after seeing off Burundi 1-0 at a neutral Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
The winner came in the first 30 minutes of the match and arrived through Olympique Lyonnais highly-rated attacker Karl Toko Ekambi.
Having played just once so far, the Indomitable Lions sit at the top of the group with a single win and three points while Burundi lie second.
Lesotho 0-0 Ivory Coast
Lesotho and Ivory Coast cancelled out each other following a goalless draw in their second qualifying clash at the Dobsonville Stadium.
The draw leaves the Elephants on top of Group K and the Southern African nation at the bottom of the table.
South Sudan 1-3 Mali
Mali claimed back-to-back wins to continue their fine start in the Cup of Nations qualifiers as they edged South Sudan 3-1 in a Group G clash.
An own-goal from Boubakar Kouyate had the host ahead, but Mali replied through Mohamed Camara and two last-ditch efforts from Sekou Koita and Aliou Dieng with Ibrahima Konate dismissed.
Guinea-Bissau 5-1 Sao Tome and Principe
Guinea-Bissau surged to the top of Group A following a dominant 5-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir.
Edmilson Viegas broke the deadlock for the visitors earlier on before Alfa Semedo, a double from Zinho Gano and further strike from Zidane Banjaqui and Jorginho put the host totally out of sight.
Guinea 1-0 Malawi
Guinea registered their first win on the path to next year’s continental showpiece through a last-minute 1-0 success over Malawi.
Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita grabbed the winner at the death and revived the West Africans chances to earn a spot in the finals next year.
