Maxwell Owusu Banahene, a former goalkeeper for Ghana’s Black Starlets, is currently held in remand at Kumasi Central
Prisons, awaiting a possible jail sentence, according to Sportsworldghana.
Banahene, who was the primary goalkeeper for Ghana’s U17 team when they achieved a 3rd place finish at the World Cup in New Zealand, has been in remand for several months. He is unable to afford the 6000 Ghana cedis required for bail while his case is pending.
The former Ghanaian youth goalkeeper is accused of defrauding a woman by promising to help her travel abroad. The two had never met in person, but had communicated online, and the woman transferred money to Banahene’s accounts.
In an interview with Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng of the Crime Check Foundation (CCF), Banahene claims that someone else used his name and account for the fraud, maintaining his innocence.
During a conversation with Crime Check, Banahene’s mother, Eno Serwaa, expressed her belief in her son’s innocence. She emphasized that he is financially disadvantaged and does not have any funds available. She appealed to Ghanaians to kindly contribute towards the required 6000 cedis.
Banahene has played for various clubs including Hasaacas, King Faisal, Unity Stars Academy, and the youth side of Asante Kotoko during his career.
