The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has promised Bafana Bafana players a prize pursue of R7 million ( $375,000) if they win the Africa Cup of Nations ( Afcon), according to report sighted by South African journalist Razeen Gutta of Scrollo Africa.
SAFA president Danny Jordan, his deputy Bennet Baily, CEO Lydia Monyepao and head of delegation for the tournament David Molwantwa met with players in Stellenbosch to put pen to paper on the bonus structure for the highly anticipated competition.
The decision to agree before the start of the tournament was made after the women’s team, Banyana Banyana, boycotted their send-off match ahead of the World Cup last year due to financial demands not being met.
“I am here to make sure that every box has been ticked, nothing is outstanding and everything is in place for them to focus on football, deliver on football and give us the kind of performances that will make the nation take a deep breath and say, ‘We have a team’,” Jordaan told Safa media.
Safa did not give a breakdown of the complete structure. However, Jordaan was clear that the bonus will only be given to the players if they take home the top prize.
“We have to get the team to focus. We have to clear everything. If they win, they get R7 million. If they lose, they get nothing. We want the team to focus and perform.
“We have, over some time, settled this team and we don’t want to waste time discussing unnecessary stuff,” he added.
The competition kicks off on Saturday with hosts Ivory Coast taking on Guinea-Bissau.
South Africa will play Mali in their first match on Tuesday, 16 January.
