The decision was announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday, after Ghana failed to advance to the knockout stages of the competition.

Hughton, who was appointed in January 2022, was tasked with revitalizing the team after a disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar. However, he was unable to lead the Black Stars to success, as they suffered a first-round exit in the AFCON.

Some netizens took to social media platforms for express their sentiments in agreement with the sack.

One user @twin_abena posted this video to show the “celebrations” that would follow the sack.

Another user expressed that, “…[it was] time for nana addo to also sack every GFA member ????????”

Other users were not satisfied and called for Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association to also be relieved of duty.

Ghana’s performances under Hughton were inconsistent, with the team losing to Cape Verde 2-1, drawing with Egypt, and then throwing away a two-goal lead in the final minutes of their must-win game against Mozambique on Monday night. The team’s elimination from the tournament was confirmed after Cameroon came from behind to beat Gambia.

The sacking of Hughton comes as no surprise, given the team’s poor performance under his leadership. The Black Stars have struggled to find their footing in games, and the pressure to perform has been mounting. The GFA has come under fire for its handling of the team, and the dismissal of Hughton is seen as a move to rectify the situation.

The search for a new coach is likely to begin immediately, with several names already being mentioned as potential candidates. Whoever takes over the job will face the daunting task of rebuilding the team and restoring its reputation as one of Africa’s top football powers.
